Unit 556
Therapeutic Applications of Ultrasound

|
Sonolith® |
In the past, researchers from our unit helped develop
technology for various models of lithotriptors
produced by EDAP TMS S.A. Sonolith® 2000, Sonolith
3000, Sonolith 4000, and the Sonolith Praktis are all
examples of successful technology transfers from our
research. These machines utilize both piezoelectric
and electroconductive technologies.
Presently, research in extracorporeal shock wave
lithotripsy (ESWL) is continuing within the unit, with
the goal of producing smaller and more efficient
piezoelectric generators. ESWL is a noninvasive
procedure using sophisticated technology that combines
X-ray imaging, ultrasound, and acoustic shock wave
production to diagnose and disintegrate renal and
urinary stones. Researchers from Team 1, primarily,
are engaged in this work and student theses recently
completed give a general description of the type of
work being done.
